i have had some posts back of simlar experience..
my concern is that my diff oil has been changed at the 27k service which was the reolve for many that are having similar..
basically when the car gets hot i get a noise only from pulling away, which i feel comes from the rear.. not a grind but more of a flllllluuurr!!
the hotter it gets the worse it gets..
the best i can come up with so far is that the diff oil can't cope at heat, so am opting to change to something better than the honda EP80 which is what they have said has been out in recently..
your experience, recommends etc would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what EP80 is...but it's a common mistake for Honda dealers to put CR-V diff oil in the s2k. That oil is death to our LSDs. How long ago was the oil changed?

You should use the recommended 75w90 weight gear oil.

last week the diff oil was changed..
i think it is a diff oil that the honda uk dealers use, but i'm not sure how good it is...
just to see the results and rule something out i'm going to put mobil 1 diff oil in.. do you know if this stuff is the same/similar as the stuff you get in the US?

The EP80 is a SAE80 gear oil. It is too thin for the differential, especially as it heats up. The noise you are hearing is called gear whine. It becomes more prevalent as the oil gets hotter and thinner. Now that you are experiencing it while reversing and what not, I suspect that some gear damage has occurred as a result of using the wrong oil.

Honda recommends that you use SAE90 GL5 hypoid type gear oil. The link to the Mobil product you are considering looks like it may be their Delvac series in the states. It should be a superior lubricant than what you've been using (EP-80). But I don't see where they recommend it for hypoid type gears.

thanks indymac, that is very helpful, i'm not happy about this at all...
if there has been diff damage caused by using this 'EP80' i shall be going to the lengths of the earth to get honda to do the necessaries...
although i'd imagine i'd need to present them with some kind of proof to substantiate this..!




tried finding hypoid recommended oils available from the uk and found

You can get Amsoil in the UK.
SG 75W-110 is the equivalent of the old SAE 90.
for an OEM diff.

Just take your owners manual in and show them the SAE 90 GL-5 recommendation.

I have not tried a 140wt yet, so no advice to give on it being good or bad. Spitfire uses SAE190, but he recommended 75W-110 for your car.

I think your best bet would be to have your differential evaluated to see if there is damage ASAP. If no damage, then use the correct fluid.
