Replacing the actual shifter
I apologize in advance if this has already been answered; I did a couple of searches and came up with nothing.
Does anyone know of DIY directions for replacing the stock shifter (not the knob, but the actual stick)?
I bought my car used and it came with an aftermarket shift knob (a crap one, too). I was planning to install a titanium Team Voodoo one today, but after wrestling with the current knob for about two hours I don't think I can. I got the crappy one off but am now left with a shifter that's got lots of rust and hardened (sturdy) glue residue in the threads.
WD40, steel wool, and a razor blade all haven't cleaned it up enough. I went ahead and ordered a new shifter from the local dealership and it should be here on Monday. If the replacement is straightforward I'd rather handle it myself than have the dealership do it, but I can't find instructions. I looked in the S2000 manual too and came up empty.

Just be careful when taking off the white plastic ring around the rubber boot, it's held in by 4 tabs that need to be pressed outward from the shifter. Prying it up the way illustrated will break them.

Thanks hecash, that detail is very much appreciated. It sounds like the grease and the careful removal of the boot retainer ring are pretty critical, though I'm concerned about the pivot ball and the cage...if they're cracked, does that become noticeable when driving?
[QUOTE=PWRMKR]I would have just bought a die and chased the threads. But that
