Thanks for the input guys. Spoke with Jeff from science of speed and he feels the cracked retainer problem was with the 00-01 models that the 03 was ok. Anybody else notice this? I will pull the valve cover and do an inspection first now.

What do you mean "while I am in there"?
Are you pulling the head? are you just changing the oil??
I am confused now.
I thought you were doing a valve job or something.
If you have not overrevved or have a ton of miles I dont know.
I always feel better safe than sorry on a track car.

Sorry what i meant was while i was replacing the valve retainers. Thinking of replacing seals, maybe springs, thinking timing chain tension is that a good time to get to the adjuster to replace it. even if i just replace oem springs or is that a waste of money at 60k miles. I do not intend to remove the head.

definitely replace the retainers. i just replaced mine in my 02 and everyone of the intake retainers was cracked. i have a thread going in the north texas forum with pictures: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=749003
you cannot truly tell if they are bad by inspecting them with a light and mirror. all of mine showed no indication of the cotters sinking but they were all heavily cracked and desperately needed to be done. all i can say is that it is worth the time and effort get them done. i replaced mine with AP2 retainers as they are tappered more at the top and a bit thicker. im pretty sure if i had hit the track day that was planned i would be buying a new motor right now. my car just came to around 80k and i have never had a definitive over rev, but i am the second owner so there is no telling what they did. its a small price to pay to ensure you do not grenade your motor.
hope this helps you.
