Default Replace alternator rectifier or buy aftermarket alternator?

Ok, I have an '06 and the dash lights started flickering at idle. From searching, it seems like this is the rectifier in the alternator going bad. The battery might be a bit on the old side (4 yrs or so), but the car starts up fine. The question I have is, should I buy the actual rectifier replacement from honda (about $200), or just get a new reman'd alternator? They can be had for ~$150 it looks like. I'm concerned the OEM part may just crap out in the future, and the simplicity of having a whole nother alternator is nice. Anyone have any preference/opinion? I've used reman'd/non-oem alternators for my other cars w/o issues.

Is there any way to be sure it's the rectifier? My voltage seems decent according to my gauge (usually around mid to lowish 13's at idle), but the idle is slightly rougher, and the dash instrument cluster lights flicker at idle. As soon as I'm not at idle it goes away.

Check the hoses over the alternator, they can leak and it will destroy it. Also if you get a remanned or non oem alternator, make sure it puts out over 110 amps, as other Honda alternators are made for cars with hydraulic power steering, we need more juice for our electronic steering.

Yup thanks, partsgeek has a remanned nippon denso 105 amp alternator for sale for $158 total which includes a $55 core charge. Part #18785-05207722. That seems like the better option than a $200 part for the OEM alternator..?

SlowTeg, this exact thing started happening to my 07 2 weeks ago. I went ahead and bought a new rectifier and will change it out next week. It seems to be a pretty easy swap. From what I heard, the hardest part is actually getting the alternator off. I don't have much experience with remanufactured parts, but I generally stay away from them. I chose to do the rectifier because I know it's the original alternator and the rectifier is really the main part of the assembly.

Let me know what you do, I'd like to know. If you go the rectifier route, this would be a perfect chance to make a DIY

I'm leaning towards reman'd because it's so much cheaper. It comes with a warranty as well, so it should be fine in theory. Removing the alternator is easy, I wouldn't be worried about it. You remove the intake, serpentine belt, and a couple bolts. Replacing the rectifier can't be that complicated either. I'll post back which route I go.

Sounds good. Apparently it's in the factory service manual starting around page 4-29.

You could always buy a used alternator. They can be relatively inexpensive at the S2KI Marketplace or on Ebay.

I picked up one on Ebay for $40.00 a few years ago as a backup and it's still sitting on a shelf in my garage. Since I have over 300,000 miles, I'm assuming the brushes in mine will eventually wear out.

I bought my Denso reman from this seller on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251312718604...84.m1497.l2649

So far so good.

FWIW I ordered the rectifier from Majestic Honda and I'm just going to go that route. Maybe I should've just done a remanned denso, ah well should be fine either way. I was a little concerned with the quality on some of the cheaper remanned ones but perhaps I was just being paranoid.

I had the same concern as you and decided to take a gamble. The reman Denso from that Ebay seller is exactly the same alternator that came out of my ap2. So when you order a reman denso from the stealership, you're essentially paying $300+ more for the same thing.

Edit: just came back from a drive, I may have lost the gamble...lol.
