Default removing stock shift knob in a 04?

I would like to remove my stock shift knob, but I dont want to break anything. Do I need to put a wrench on the nut below the knob and unscrew? I tried just unscrewing it, but it wouldn't budge.

Yes, just crack open the nut on the bottom, give it a good turn and it should come off. It should not be overly hard to do. However if the previous owner lock tighted the knob on, you would have to use a excessive force or even heat to get it off.
