Remove Cluster surround?
I have a new cluster surround to replace the one that was damaged during my dash install.
I removed the two top screws (actually just one as they had left on out
) and loosened the surround but the steering colum surround seems to trap it. I've removed the bottom of the steering surround but the top is trapped by the cluster and steering wheel.
Do I really have to remove the steering wheel to get to this thing? Or just the air bag assembly? And how do I remove the airbag assembly? I know about disconnecting the battery etc, but do I just pull the steering wheel cover off?
I have the Workshop Manual on CD but it just glosses over this stuff.

Yes, the steering wheel and Airbag assembly must be removed to get to the cluster that contains the audio controls etc...

This link is for the QR install but has some basic instructions for the bag and wheel removal etc...
Once the wheel is removed you will see a black SRS assembly and I think it was held on with 3 small screws - remove this thEn you will see the turn signal assembly (white) and I think it was held on with 4 screws - pretty basic stuff then the cluster will clear the steering column once you unhook the four wire clips that attach the audio, cruise, R defroster and climate controls - the dash cluster just clips in if I remember correctly once the two screws are removed on the underside of the cluster but above the speedo and they are covered with plastic caps - Hope this helps

you dont ahve to take the wheel off.
do a search for the directions on installing cubes audio controller. you can remove 2 and loosen the other bolts that hold the steering column up and it will lower far enough to remove the bezel.

just lower the sterring rack a couple of inches and the surround pops right out. I did it on another S, and actually I still need to do it on mine (replacing my black 04 surround with the "silver look" 02 colored surround).
keep us posted how it all turns out
