Default Regarding the strength of the S2K

Hypothetical question... and I know these topics have been covered extensively, but not the exact question I want to ask.

With the diff being the somewhat weak link of the S2000, how much abuse can it take? The occasional pop of the clutch to get the car sideways or a very occasional launch, will the diff last through these things?

AND.... when the diff has blown up for people...does it just go bad from some certain event, or does it slowly wear out?

Thanks guys....

Not really what I am asking... but thanks...

I want to know more of a general idea , im not modify the car or beating on it, I just want to know how much the car can take on a normal basis and not break.

uhm, after 300 + clutch dumps, at roughly 7000 RPM, with a 400 HP 400 Tq pressure plate, having gone through 1 trans, and 1 set of rear tires. i havent broke the diff yet. it doesnt even make noise. I run LE607. and i know how to drive the car. after looking at several blown diffs, and setting up a 4.77. i have come to the conclusion, that our diff can take some serious power. problem is, the old style has some issues, and that should be apparent by now. other problem, i dont think any of the people who have broken a diff, know what wheel hop is. they just stay in it while the car loads and unloads, and the diff housing must look like bugs bunnys oven with dynamite in it, as it swells and shrinks swells and shrinks. in doing so, tolerances change and the lash is incorrect, leaving less contact and a high shock load, BOOM, the ends of the teeth break off. and i can tell you, if you dont *set* the car on the launch, it will wheel hop like crazy. and i know if id have stayed in it, it would break.
my background is extensive in aircooled drag racing. and this same problem plagues stock gearbox vws. the case expands under wheel hop, and the ring and pinion teeth ride on edge and the diff busts. yet if a smooth launch with good traction is acheived, i have seen guys run 250 hp on stock trans, which is made for 52 hp, and pull the wheels so far that the tail hit the ground. yet if they wheel hop once, BOOM.
i am planning on going pretty far on my s2k, just to test it. ill be running drag radials, and 100 shot staged here soon. so that will tell you how good the stock diff is. and if not, we are gonna weld up ,and brace/reinforce the stock diff case. till it holds. you guys can bolt junk parts in your cars all day long, (240z diffs, bmx diffs) whatever, ill use some old school ideas to make what i have work. you just watch. laters dave

It sounds like your're after something that nobody can tell you. Finding the exact point of failure means you have to break something. Not many will start this experiment.

Eventually, everything will break. Your version of "normal abuse" can be very different from others. It's been well documented that the differential gears, the axles, the housing will all break. Just be very aware of that before side stepping the clutch.
