Lots of good info here so far. Some comments I'd like to make are based on what I've learned and tried so far:
OEM fill appears to be a SAE 20wt oil from UOA's.
Honda recommends 10W30 or 5W40 API SL/SM.
AP1's consume considerably more oil than AP2's.
Honda says change your oil every 3750 or 7500 miles based on your maintenance schedule. It's OK to use synthetic oil as long as you stay with the maintenance schedule and don't change your factory fill earlier than your maintenance schedule calls for.
Using SM dino oil until 10K will offer you no advantage over SM synthetic for continued break in. The wear protection is comparable from each. Using a oil with high moly content may help if you are concerned about the FRM liners though.
There are many types of synthetic oils on the market. The majority are group III. A handfull are group IV, and a fingerfull are group V. There are also many synthetic blends.
I have not seen a bad UOA from any of the above mentioned types of synthetics in the S2000, except Redline (Group V). Redline fans claim that wear metals are so high in UOA's because it is cleaning engine deposits more than other synthetics. Maybe there's some merit to that since the base oil is a heavy detergent.
Oil flow is most important in the S2000. That's why we have a special oil filter (15400-PCX-004). With that in mind, using a 0W30 or 5W30 synthetic might be optimum for the S2000 as long as it stays in grade at higher temps. Two group IV's that might do this the best are Castrol Syntec 0W30 and AMSoil 5W30. Mobil 1 0W40 could be another keeper. but the jury is still out on that one for me.
Schaeffer's 7000 has been mentioned a couple of times on this board. I believe it is a Group IV blend that has shown excellent UOA's on BITOG. I have no reason to doubt that it would be a great oil for the S2000.
I personally use MaxLife synthetic 10W30, and have used Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 in the past. Both oils produced incredibly good UOA's with 5K mile OCI's. I'm considering using Castrol Syntec 0W30 on my next fill. I like how it is doing in my 2003 G35.
No matter what oil you choose, check your oil level at least once a week. This engine is pretty bullett proof if it has enough oil!
