Recommendations on my oil change interval
Hey guys,
I use AMSOIL 10w30 signature series synthetic and I was wondering what the change interval is on this oil. I currently have about 4K miles on the oil now but its pretty dirty. I use a white paper towel when I check my oil to see how dirty it is.
But ive read some say im just wasting money changing it below 5K miles and AMSOIL is $10 a quart so it is expensive. Is the color of the oil and indicator of it needing to be changed or should I wait another 1000 miles??
thanks guys!!

If you're not doing mostly short trips (less than around 15 minutes or less), you can easily go 5000 miles on Amsoil Signature Series 10W30. If you want to feel comfortable about it, go 5000 miles on your next OCI then send a sample to a lab to get it tested. Make sure you get a TBN, which will give you an indication of how much life is left in the oil. Once you see the results, you'll know for sure.
I go 40,000 miles between oil changes with Amsoil 0W30 but I drive lots of highway miles and I have a bypass filter. I get my oil tested at each oil change and I have plenty of life left in my oil. Of course, adding oil between changes helps.

The golden rule of oil is that colour means nothing. Don't use colour to determine oil change intervals, dark oil does not mean dirty oil. You are just throwing out good oil if you change it too early, that oil is top notch and it can go long distances if needed. Navylights has a post on the first page of this forum with an 8,100 mile run on Amsoil 10w30 SS, and it had plenty of life left in it. Slalom44 has found the fountain of youth with his engine and oil as you can see, so your 4k miles is still a low OCI IMO. Try having your oil analyzed to know for sure, well worth the relatively low cost.
