Default Rear Tire Wear

I have 15,000 carefully driven miles on my S. Several weeks ago (about 1500 miles ago) I noticed the rear tires appeared to have some excess wear. Today I noted that the tread wear indicators were actually showing. Yikes!

The tires appear to be worn mostly from the center and inner aspect. I have never burned rubber in the car and have never taken it to the track. I can understand the soft rubber in high performance tires wearing quickly. What I don't understand is why the front tires look nearly new.

Is this a common tire wear pattern in the S? Will replacing the rear tires only at this time cause any handling/stability problems? I'd like to get a new set of rims and tires at a later date. I just can't afford a whole new set of S02's at this time, what with starting a new business and all.

"Or you might try a new set of Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's. The Tire Rack's price is $302 for four tires (before taxes, mounting, etc.). Several people have tried these tires and like them. Airgate and w1ngman are two that have tried them and they both recommend them.

Tire wear on the S2000 is generally from the inner part of the tire outward due to the negative camber. I think you'll find that 15K is pretty good for a set of rears... I averaged closer to 6K miles with mine.

The rear tires are also set to toe-in to help handling/stability. I've replaced one set of rears, and now it's time for four new tires. My first indication of the rears wearing out was hydro-planing during a rainstorm with about 12,000 miles on them.

Remember when replacing them, the 225 wide OEM S-02's have a contact patch closer to that of a 245.

I was wondering if another performance tire would last longer? From what I've heard the S-03's seem to wear almost as quickly.

I replace mine every 30,000km (18750miles) or so. Rear tends to wear more than front, but since I don't often drag or burn rubber, fronts aren't worth keeping anyway, otherwise they'd only be 5000km behind.

The funniest thing, was I took my car in for 75,000km service, during which they inspect tyre wear. They noted that "Rear brake pads have 5000km left, Read tyres have 5000km left)

I had only done 5000km on the tyres. They still looked brand spanking new.

Someone trying to sell me something?

Hmmm...Tire Rack wants $141 each for the OEM rear tires....the Kumho's may be a real option this time around. I wonder if they wear any better?

I would not suggest you go with Kumhos on the rears only. They have significantly less grip than the S-02s and this will cause a "loose" or oversteering handling characteristic. IMO very unsafe. I did a 4 tire change with the Kumhos and have been through several brands, See here .

I would also remind you that you don't need a 4 tire change yet, just the rears. You're really looking at $141 x 2 plus tax, and mounting/balancing. FWIW, I usually get only 12,000 miles on my rears before they are too hard (not out of tread yet) and lacking in grip.
