so let me get this straight
once I unbolt those 8 bolts the rear is free but the book says to unbolt the half shafts apart, well im thinking if the rear is free, then God help me hold that rear up while trying to unbolt those half shafts apart, not happening..
so what you guys did was to just pop the axles right out the diff without disassembling them, correct?
i ll be doing this in the cold and on the ground so i want to suffer the least...

Follow this step by step on the rear diff removal, I did this by myself and a floor jack and did the install as well - I highly advise a second pair of hands though to operate the floor jack, I am just a loser and have no friends!

I also removed one of the two front diff mount arms which are held on by two 14 mm bolts - this made it easier for me to move the diff around to remove the half shafts!

cool, thanks a lot x and the rest of you guys
I mean damn I did a clutch replacement all by myself with a jack so this sould be a lot easier on this car,
I have done many tranny drops and rear drops on american cars but on this Honda, everything seems to be 100% more difficult, just my personal observation.

Dammm wish I saw this again before you had to pop the joints. A good trick is undo the the bolt to one of the rear shocks an move the shock of the arm. Then place a jack under the tire or the arm and pump away. This provides enough space to remove the half shafts with out removing the ball joints.

The Verdict:
I opened the diff and at first it didnt seem apparent what broke to the case but upon further examination I did see that a tooth broke off the pinion gear.
the cap bearings werent broken
As far as the whinning I saw that the contact was wasnt in the middle. When looking at the ring gear, the pinion gear was mostly contacting the ring gear teeth towards the top left, I could also see that the very edge of the tooth on the ring gear were a bit chewed.
I believe they call this "face" contact.
Oh well its off to Ohio...
