Quick fix for stuck/locked convertible top latches
Last night I hopped in the car with my buddy and went to lower the top when the passenger side roof release latch wouldn't work. I couldn't squeeze the button to make it release the hook that fastens the whole top to the windshield. After a little jiggling, something went flying and the assembly came unclasped, although it still wasn't working right. I got home, checked out the latch, and realized one of the screws that keeps the sliding piece on its rails had come out and the other was dangerously close to coming totally unscrewed.
This seems to be a common problem. Some suggestions have been made to buy a whole new latch assembly ($90-ish) since they don't sell individual pieces. Don't.
Go to Lowes/Home Depot. Go to the fastener section, and find the drawer with the really small machine screws. Get an M3 screw as short as you can find. If you don't have the washers from the old screws, buy the smallest washers you can find for it. In the Lowes I went to, these were in a drawer right above the screws. Buy some Loctite.
Viola. You've gotten all the parts to permanently solve the issue for well under $10 instead of $90. It takes about 5 minutes to replace all 4 screws/washers. Just unlatch the roof so the assembly hangs loose and do them one at a time.
Hope this helps someone out there. Happy driving!
