Default Questions concerning LSD.........

Wondering if someone could help me out here about the Diff. I just had my 4.57 gears and Comptech reinforced diff put in my car not too long ago. But I forgot to ask the guy who did the work if the S has an LSD or not. So, I thought I would ask you guys because I am not sure. The reason I ask is because when I spin the tires both wheels spin, not just one. But I am curious too because I see people buying aftermarket LSD's. Why buy an aftermarket one if the S already has one. Or does it?

First off, if you really wanna know about LSD, you're about 30 years late. The '60s and '70s consumed most of it.

Okay, bad Timothy Leary joke...

The S has a Torsen-type LSD. This is appropriate for a street car and gets away from clutches that must slip in turns, etc. The biggest catch with this type is when autocrossing or somehow driving with huge G loads in tight turns where body roll will allow the inside rear tire to unload and the diff asks like an open diff. This is because the Torsen design requires both tires to have similar loads to operate properly.

So, you're not imagining things. An aftermarket diff would be appropriate for those who need different characteristics for racing. Of course, we find that many folks install this sort of thing because they apparently have too much money and just want to change the car without understanding why it may or may not be a good thing to do. Since you appear to have made some significant HP increases with more to come, it may be worthwhile to consider an upgrade but you should also be considering upgraded parts in the rest of the driveline, too...
