Default Questions about turbos

I've had my car for about eight months now and I am extremely happy with it, but I would like to figure out a way to increase the low end torque. I've looked at both of the superchargers and they don't seem to help out except in top end. It seems like a turbo charger would be the best option b/c it would be spooled up by 3,000 rpms. I've read the posts about the speedcraft turbo kit. It sounds like a very well engineered kit, but what other options do I have? How much boost can the F20C hold? How much boost could I run with the stock compression? What other parts would need to be replaced?

The most that any reasonable person is using with the stock compression is 8 - 8.5 PSI. If you go to extreme measures, and you lower the compression to around 9.5 to 1.0 you might be able to push 13 - 14 PSI. The only parts that are replaced are the manifold, ECU, and the intake, everything else, is just bolt-ons.

XERD turbo, Ultimate turbo, Rev hard?, Speed craft, and there are a few custom manifolds out there so you could do it your self. Look at speedcraft's home page, they have all the parts listed that all the companys are using in general.

Yeah 8 to 8.5 psi is about as high as you can go with stock compression. You could turn the boost up some more if you used race gas. If you get a turbo you will probably need anew clutch.

"What other options do I have?"

You have many other options however, if you want something that's proven to work in many cars Speedcraft is the obvious choice.

"How much boost can the F20C hold?"

You can safely run up to .5 bar on pump gas which depending on your location would be in the realm of about 7.3psi. If you opted to go with race fuel then you could bump it up to about .6 bar / 8.8psi.

"How much boost can I run with the stock compression?"

See previous answer

"What other parts would need to be replaced?"

Anthony,
Just out of curiosity, what are you basing that on? Additionally what kind of power are you hoping for at that boost level?

I agree with you BlackS2000Turbo. No more than .5 bar. I am getting a .4bar TIAL 46mm wastegate so that is 5.8psi. Obviously I will use the profec b to raise that to 6-7. I have heard of too ma ny engines blowing up when people decide to test out 8-10psi with our high compression. So without a Mike Simon bottom end, nothing more than 7psi for me. Power wise, over 300whp. -Anthony

I good turbo will get you over 200 ft/lbs of torque maybe even up to 240 ect. I'd like to hear cjb80's take on torque in terms of his newest project utilizing the big GT turbo as I know the SpeedCraft gets 220ft/lbs. I will be going the same route as Chris and diGital.James and I never really thought about how much torque is probable. I'd imagine how much easier it will be to drive (after tuned of course to make it as driveable as possible) with all that torque. -Anthony

All I can say is get ready to drop about 5K into upgrading your drive train............or be ready to replace things ALL THE TIME.

That is if you drive the car harder than my grandmother. Obviously you can NOT damage things but it won't be even touching the abilities of the engine at that level of boost.
