Sorry my mouse jumped. the purpose of the air box is that it prevents hot engine air from entering your intake manifold. If you remove or allow hot air into your engine it will aggressively retard your engine timing leading to decreased horse power. That is why your after market cold air systems are desiged to go in front of the rad and not behind. see April 2003 C&D.If you drill holes in the box your car derives only one benifit. It will be lighter...

The purpose of the stock airbox is to provide an efficient air intake combined with the high airflow this engine requires. It is NOT designed to keep hot engine bay air out. This has been proven by temperature measurements done by several board members (myself included).
What Wantone is doing is drilling holes in a part of the airbox that is completely inside and thus, does not let any "new" air to come into it. Air still comes in via the same opening as before. Wantone's only mod from stock is the addition of the "snorkel". This brings the air from in front of the rad, making the stock airbox a true CAI. Putting holes where he enquired about, without doing other airbox mods, will show minimal benefit and no detriment.
Car magazines do not always keep a car long enough to truly understand what's going on in the "real" world.
