Default Question for the wheel bearing experts

So, I replaced all of my hubs before winter storage and was instantly greated by a weird howling, that never got better. I even pulled the hubs and didn't replace the bearings because they felt perfect. Finally after dealing with this insane metallic howel I started getting grease slung behind the hub of the right rear, indicating something was wrong.

So today I pulled everything to find that the shield to the bearing behind the hub was dented along the very outside edge, causing the shield to be deformed a bit. The bearing was perfect, but you could see where the sheild rubbed on the inner race. The dents were perfectly spaced with the two ends of the snap ring. So somehow the bearing had pressed against the snap ring, but I have no clue how. The snap ring goes on and the hub presses on over putting pressure away from the ring. The two marks were perfect meaning it was stationary when it happened. The only other option is that the Billman spec is too much for a Timken bearing/snap ring and it pulled the snap ring into the sheild, but I would think if that were the case the snap ring would have stayed there and wore all of the way around. I just don't get what could have caused this.
