Default Question for the TCT survivors...

I am getting the so familiar TCT clank on my S. I went to the dealer (Landmark Honda in VA) a couple of weeks ago and they said its was around $450 to replace it. At the time I said "what the heck?!" $450 is not that bad. I know is really easy to change and I can get a TCT for $150 but am lazy and I live in a condo...so no garage. Anyways I came back to the dealer yesterday and they changed the story. Apparently they don't change the TCT by itself anymore and now they have to change the guides too. They said it was a memo that came from Honda saying that they can't only change the TCT without the guides so its pretty much all or nothing and now it is $1200.

I will appreciate any input and/or advice on this matter.

Is it better to take it somewhere else? Any good and affordable place in Northern VA? Is it a good deal?

What say you?!?!?!

Timing chain tensioner replacement takes 15 minutes or so. They are ripping you off.

Read all of this: https://www.s2ki.com/home/2012/02/08...ain-tensioner/

Buy a TCT from Billman250, grab the basic hand tools, and do it in the parking lot on a sunny Saturday. It is way too easy of a swap to justify paying the original $450 for the stealership to do it. That DIY up there is excellent and tells you all the hand tools you need.

^Agreed

You dont even need a garage. If done properly/carefully you won't have any spills. Only a 10mm socket/ratchet, an allen socket or wrench for the access hole, and a needle nose pliers to pull the set pin are required. Very very very easy.

1200 for a TCT job? Seriously man don't ever do that. It's so easy. All you need is some basic tools and your good to go

Thanks guys. I know that replacing a TCT is not a government shutdown but how about the chain guides thing they said. They told me that I have to change everything because if I don't I will have the clanking sound again in a couple of months. What's the deal with that?

Calling Billman (we need a Billman signal like Batman). Billman, how often do chain guides have issues on the S?

One thing they said makes sense, if you just change the TCT with one from Honda, it won't be long before the noise comes back. But not because you didn't change the guides, but because the new TCT went bad. The Billman version of this part does not have that issue.

The dealer says they have a memo from Honda saying they should change the guides along with the tensioner. I call BS. Ask them to show you this document. If they can't or won't, call them out on the BS. If they do, get a pic of this and post it here for us to review and to spread the knowledge.

Dealership service departments are desperate for money. No one really uses them anymore or bails once the cars warranty is up. So they will do or say anything to rip you off and get your money. They prey on your lack of car knowledge and expect you to take their word for it that the $1200 is a legit repair.

Billman replaced my TCT with his modified one in less than 2 minutes. Buy the TCT from him and do it yourself. Its stupid simple. There is a DIY on here too...
