Thumbs up Question re: engine/tranny removal

I will be pulling my engine over the weekend in preparation for having it fully built. I am doing this effort with the car on jack stands. According to my Helm's manual, I am supposed to remove the tranny prior to pulling the engine. I believe this is because of the layout of the engine and the front cross member. I know that, on some cars, the engine and tranny can be removed as one.

Anyways, I will be borrowing a friend's cherry picker which has an leveler on it. I believe this could allow me to remove the engine with the tranny still attached because as I start to pull the engine up I can lower the back portion where the tranny is.

Thoughts?

It will not fit pulling it from the top. You can drop them both, with the sub frame out the bottom. If we did not have that cross beam in front of the motor, you could pull it I am sure.

If I had a lift then I would most assuredly drop it all down the bottom. However, since I am doing this all on jack stands I don't have a choice but to go up (with the engine at least). As I mentioned in my initial post, the cherry picker has a leveler on it which would allow me to drop the back portion of the engine as I am hoisting it upwards. Do you not think this would do the trick?

No, I don't. There is not enough clearance to pull the motor forward enough to not hit the firewall with the head on when you tip it. With the head off, I still don't think it will clear the firewall when tipped. It is that front cross beam that stops you from going forward enough to clear. Now if you cut out that center beam, you are golden.

Well, I purchased a transmission adapter for my floor jack. Looks like I will be using it after all and dropping the tranny out the bottom.
