Default question from a paranoid owner

i'm gonna cut the story short and get to the important details.
i was on my way home exiting the freeway and i downshifted from 5th to what i thought was 4th... but it ended up being 2nd gear. bad, bad, bad. i didnt realize i was in second till i started lifting the clutch and the RPMs started raising hella high (up to 6k) but before it could really reach 6k, i pressed down on the clutch, HARD, to keep the revs down. immediately after i switched to the proper gear and went on.

my question:
could i have hurt anything in my car doing this. i know the s2000 specialist at the stealership told me that i could damaged anything in my car during this whole process?

o yes, and after this i've been paying particular attention to the sound of my idleing to see if it rough or normal.

TIA all

I think you are ok if it only happened once and you caught it at 6000 rpms. Its more like an aggressive downshift. The good thing is you caught it quickly.

Fortunately its well under warranty too so if you start hearing strange noises you wont have to worry about paying for the repair.

By the way you are not paranoid, just an owner who takes pride in ownership. I am the same way and am dealing with a silly steering resistane problem so I know where you are coming from.

so you pushed the clutch back in at 6k rpm? what are you worried about?

I wouldn't go doing it on a regular basis, but you shouldn't have damaged anything, thats for sure.

How fast were you travelling? If you weren't going fast enough to over-rev the engine, you have nothing to worry about. Otherwise, it'll depend on whether you really caught it and stopped releasing the clutch before the engine exceeded redline.

That's BS. Warranty doesn't exist to fix problems caused by driver abuse/misuse/stupidity. Warranty exists to fix manufacturer defects.

It's attitudes like yours that make it that much more difficult for the rest of us to get valid warranty repairs.

Of the car didn't mechanically over-rev over redline, then you're fine. Just don't make a habit of skipping from 5th to 4th or anything.

If you're wrong and the car did get over redline, you'll want to check your valve retainers and keepers for signs of cracking. Plenty of threads here on S2KI about what to look for, complete with pictures.

Checking the retainers and keepers is almost as much effort as replacing them, since you pretty much have to remove the retainer to look at the bottom of it to really know for sure.

you said you were "exiting the freeway," so does that mean you were under 60mph anyway? if so, 2nd gear runs up to just about 60mph, so you wouldn't have caused an overrev.

also, i really don't understand how people can think 2nd gear is 4th. i'm not trying to be a jerk here, and i sincerely hope you didn't damage your car at all, but the position of 2nd gear is so much different from 4th to me. not only in this car, but my previous 3 manual cars as well. i never understood the 3rd to 4th misshift into 2nd, because you really do have to put pressure on the shifter to the left in order to get it in there.

i haven't ever missed a shift like that, ever. i don't powershift, but i don't shift like a grandma either. of course, that doesn't mean i'm a better driver than anyone else, but it's hard for me to grasp the concept of missing a shift like that. there's no reason for it to go left or right if you're just pulling straight back, either from 3rd-4th or 5th-4th shifting. the shifter automatically resets itself to the center gates.

don't get mad at me...just want to pick your brain.

Easy killer...

Don't make it sound like I try to abuse the warranty. However I do know that there are somethings that no matter how crazy the end user may treat the product, the Manufacturer will cover.

It obviously does not apply to this case but I am just saying if something did happen I do not think he would have an issue with such low mileage. Its not like he put nos in the car and tried to cirucumvent the rev limiter or perform other out of warranty modifications.

Trust me, he'd have an issue. Cracked retainers and/or valve-to-piston contact is an easy one for the dealer to diagnose as the result of abuse.
