can valves, retainers, and springs be replaced without taking it to a machine shop? my friend keeps telling me he can do it without taking it to a shop. He replaced all his valves on his audi rs2 and did not take it to a shop.
Yes, everything but the guides can be done by a competent mechanic...but if you have jacked a valve guide and don't replace it, then you will leak oil into the combustion chamber. Nasty smoke, increased oil consumption and lower performance.

with the valve bent right now, there are none of those symptoms except for the lower conpression in the single cylinder. would that be evidence that the guide is ok? Can you visually see if a guide is bent?

I would say let the machine shop do the valve installs too. Springs, retainers and up, any mech can do it. three angle valve jobs, leave that to the pros. machine shop.

Also it is over kill to replace all of the guide. Have the shop check out the head and tell you what it needs. That is what they do. It will save you $$ in the end.
