question about rev limiter...
Rev limiter is there to protect from over rev's...so is it bad to hit the rev limiter occasionally? I'm not planning on making a habit but just wanted to know...thanks. I wish I had 9k redline...

most people will tell you to search, but since i feel like typing....
The rev limiter which you hit while you are in gear and on the throttle, is there to protect the engine from throttle induced over revs. Since it is there as a security feature, its not very bad to hit it occasionally. However if you lay on the throttle for an extended period of time you may increase the potential for damage.
Also if you manage to over rev by by shifting into the wrong gear, for example from 4th to 3rd (instead of 5th) and you make the engine rev past the normal redline, then the rev limiter will not help you since this will have been a mechanical over rev. Mechanical over revs are the highly damaging kind, and should be avoided at all cost, they will kill your motor.

Hitting the rev limiter will cause no adverse effects to the motor. I hit mine frequently with no problem.
A buddy of mine who had an '04 Z06 would hit the rev limiter for 2-3 seconds each lap at a track in Atlanta because upshifting and then downshifting at the corner would take too long. It was crazy, 145mph and bouncing on the limiter for a few seconds each lap at the top of 4th gear. Wow.

DO A SEARCH!! haha j/k. rev limiter makes the motor push out a shortage of gas when it's reached. so that way the motor wouldn't be overreved too much. it's not that bad to hit it every once in a while. my friend always hits the rev limiter in his wrx. that probably explains why he blew his turbo.

the point being that its "not that bad" to hit it once in a while. The longest that I have hit it was coming out of a corner into a straightaway which ended at the finish line. It felt like eternity but was probably only for like 1 second or so, on the next run i decided to shift, but i didnt really gain any time advantage.
I wouldnt recommend laying on the rev limiter for more than 2-3 seconds max, though, the plain reason being that "shit can happen" especially at 9000rpms
