Question about Immobilizer
Hey guys.
I just saw an s2000 with an immobilizer under the dash. It looks like a "chip" you can take out. The onwer told me that if you take out that "chip", the car woudln't be able to start.
But I always thought the immobilizer is in the key?
Can someone please clarify what exaclty did I see? TIA.

There's indeed an immobilizer in the key, but quite often aftermarket alarms add another one.
My alarm does too, however it requires me to enter a pincode instead of using a chip. It cuts-off both the fuel-pump and ignition, apart from the cut-off that the built-in immobilizer already does.
I imagine one keeps this chip near one's carkeys so it seems of limited use to me when they both are stolen.

there is a device in the car that receives the signal from the immobilizer "chip" in your key. if you remove that device from the car, the car will not start.

The "immobilizer" system on this car consists of the coded pellet (or chip if you will) in your key, the code reader and the ECU itself.

I just noticed a module under my steering wheel today. I think I have seen it before, but never thought to much until reading this thread. It is only visible with the steering wheel inverted 180 degrees. There is a bar code sticker on it. It definitely looks the sort of thing that has a PCB inside. Now I'm wondering what it is, I'm thinking SRS or Immobilizer. I'm leaning toward SRS, I guess if I figure it out I'll post.

If you check the Helm under "Immobilizer System", you'll see that the immobilizer receiver unit is built into the lock assembly and actually resides above it.
The SRS unit is behind the radio. I think you may have found the keyless entry control unit.

Hi Xviper, I have actually been reading some stuff on here about the immobilizer. Let's just say I could feel safer. I'm going to do some reading in the helms. I was just trying to figure out what the little module under steering wheel is, but now I'm interested. Come to think of it I should have known that the SRS control module is behind the radio somewhere. I was thinking it may just be a part of one of these systems. I said I was leaning towards SRS in case it turns out to be something "undocumented", but I doubt it, it is pretty visible. Unless the logic is the steering wheel lock protects it? pretty unlikely.
You're probably right.
EDIT: do you know if airbags inflate with N, or N20?
