Default Question about Fluid Replacement

What's up everyone, this is my first time posting on this board. I just purchased a spa yellow 01 S2k 2 weeks ago and want to change the tranny fluid and diff fluid. I bought the car used with 16K miles on it but when I changed the oil it didn't look that clean. The filter was an ACDelco brand filter.

I purchased a Honda filter and replaced the oil with 10W30 Mobil 1 Syn oil, but since I figured the oil was bad the other fluids might also be bad.

My question is: what type of fluid should I use when changing the Tranny fluid and Diff fluid.

How many quarts will I need for each change, and what is the best brand to go with? I heard that Redline and Mobil 1 are good but I'm not sure what grade or type I need to use and how much will I need to buy.

I heard that the Honda fluid is no good and it wears out easly. I would like to use a synthetic (spelling) brand.

Can someone please recommend the brand and grade.

Thanx.

Check the FAQ's, and also go to the Under the Hood section.

XViper has a lot of great posts on how to's, and I and others have posted on lubrication topics.

From my reading here, a lot of people stick with the Honda MTF for the transmission and a lot of people use Mobil 1 75-90w for the differential. There are of course many other opinions.

There are some excellent write ups on both of these procedures by xviper in the Under the Hood forum. Scroll on down to his first post here and you'll see them.

I've never heard of lifelong fluid before. I change both my tranny and diff fluid every 15k miles. The posts on the board can attest to 1) the transmission feeling smoother with periodic changes, 2) the stock differential fluid is just plain awful looking and begs to be changed.

So far, after 95k miles, I haven't (knock on wood) had any issues with either the transmission or the differential.

Remember that OIL is the BLOOD for our cars.

Don't ever think any fluid is for life. Do the dif, mine was trashed at 4k. Clutch fluid(not to be confused with manual trans oil) was also trashed. I'm with Wortham as far as fluids go. 1 qt will do for the dif, you need two for the trans(holds like 1.5-1.9 qts can't remember exactly)
