Default question about 4.77 final drive install

Alright well I should be getting my gears soon in the mail and was going to call around today to get some price quotes for the install. I know a tech at lee summit honda that works on all the s2000's in my area and does a really good job. Well I called them and he said it would take about 10 hours for the install and would cost around 900 dollars. They said they gave me a safe quote and it could be less. It seems alittle pricey :-( I was wondering what you all thought. Does this sound like a fair price? How long do you guys think it would be to install?

Did you tell them they'd be working on the differential and not the transmission???

I'm no expert but that sounds like an absurdly ridiculous price. I'm having my awd subaru transmission completely rebuilt for $1000 WITH parts (I know, good deal!)

To throw a couple of gears in a diff I would expect to be around 3-4 hours of labor, possibly a bit more. Last I checked expensive shops were charging around $100/hr in labor. That being said, I would be extremely offended if someone wanted to charge me more than $300-400 to do this.

Maybe he's behind on his mortgage??? Don't be a sucker...

That is completely ridiculous. I got my 4.77's, had them cryo treated and installed by an excellent builder, puddydad, all together for $900

Here is my question now. Who has instaled these themself or had a shop locally install them for you. How long did it taek you to install them yourself or how long did it take the shop to install them. I want to get a rough idea on how long it willtake so honda doesn't rip me off telling me it took them 7-10 hours.

Seems a bit high for a diff install. I payed $600 cash for my 4.77's and that even included new carrier bearings and seals.

You have to understand that this price is for the R&R as well as the gear install. The $900 is not a bad deal.

The R&R is the process of remove and install of the differential from the car this cost is around $300 to $400 at most shops and dealers.
A gear install cost $200 to $500 depending on where you are and where you go.

The time to do this job right can take all day and then some especially if the tech runs into issues with your install.

Doing the job your self is costly too, just the shim kit is $150 and you only need one shim but, what shim
