I'm going by the TSB for the 5th gear lockout for what grease to use - it actually lists silicone grease and urea grease, so the Shin-etsu and the red/white tub for urea grease I'd imagine. I'm going by the part numbers in the TSB, so I hope its the right stuff.

I finally got around to taking apart the shifter - no broken pieces, so its either in need of grease or its something further in the the transmission.

I'll grease it and see how it behaves. The cup, while not cracked, seems to be on there fine - not super tight, it will move around with my finger. Is that within spec?

How many miles have you driven since changing thr MTF? How does it feel after driving for at least 30 minutes?

I've found that mine is like this until it warms up. Might just be a weather difference that is making you notice it. Seems like the water warms up, then the engine oil, then the tranny/diff fluid, so it might not happen at all on a short drive. Most of my drives are just short enough that the shifting never gets really smooth. Kind of annoying.

I've noticed much notchier shifting the last few weeks as the temps have dropped. It takes a good 5-10 mins of city driving before the shifter loses it's notchy feel (depending on how long the car has been sitting and the temp at the time).

Look in DIY first. It says there that notchiness is common for AP1s.

This started to happen about 3-4 months after a trans fluid change and the fluid was changed again but did not help. This isn't the normal cold notchiness either, it's always there regardless the engine or trans heat.

I'm going to grease things up today and see if it helps. Is there any linkage btween the shifter and the trans?

Yes there is linkage, but it's not something that requires maintenance. Greasing the shift lever is about it. BTW I had an MY00 that was sold at 115k and the shifter was greased twice over that time.

Is the shift lever removable from inside the car? I wasn't able to find a diy on that.
