We used a 1" drive socket and 4 feet of leverage on both the holder and the socket. This wasn't so bad but it did take a tremendous amount of torque. Some have reported that it can take up to 500 lb/ft to crack that thing lose. Once you get it to move even 1/4 turn, you're home free.

We've snapped a 1/2" breaker bar(picture later) trying to go CCW. I have a Comptech sc which doesn't really matter.

I'm becoming very frustrated. Any tips, suggestions, etc. are appreciated. The head has already been removed.
Skip,

I've got a 3/4" drive ratchet you can borrow. It is only a Craftsman, but at least it wouldn't matter if it broke. It might be hefty enough to do the job, just stick a pipe on it if you need more leverage. I've also got a 1/2" drive breaker bar if you want to give another one a shot (craftsman as well unfortunately)

Question about your question

You trying to pull the motor/trans as a unit? Is that why you need to pull the crank pulley?
I figured it would be easiest to drop both out together. I am just like a woman who has gone past her due date: I JUST WANT IT OUT!!!

The 1/2" breaker bar we used was a old Craftsman one that was my dad's. I had a pipe over that. I had a blanket wadded up on the passenger side fender... just in case we got lucky. I'm thankful that Sharon Loving stopped by with Mike's holder a couple of weeks ago.

As frustrated as I am(it's been almost a year since PrincesS has been whole), I guess I should be very thankful that I have a home, garage, and family unlike many down south.

Whatever happened to the old run the breaker bar taught to the ground and use the starter motor to undo the bolt for you? Does that work? <never done it before on the S... just got some old V8 experience>

I'd say if you could fit a 3/4 drive it would be great, haven't tried it. I think it comes down to the strength of the 1/2 stuff...maybe a bud has something of high quality kicking around...

On a domestic V8 with a monster sized battery, and equally monster sized starter, it;s been known to work.

I wouldn't try it on a S though. The Starter is not cheap or easy to replace, the battery is under 500cca. I'd predict a heavy click from the solenoid, and that's about it.

Another S2ki member had his car on jackstands with the e-brake engaged. The starter didn't have enough power to spin the motor over with the brake on.

Sounds like I could have the engine out faster if I pulled the trans first.

Chris....you think any time is being saved by doing it in one shot?
