the guy just wants to understand...

nothing wrong with that.

if you want to teach, then enlighten him...otherwsie don't get mad at him for asking and probing the reasons why. it doesn't necessarily connotate doubt in the answer, but rather a a thirst for understanding and learning.

I can't answer your question, but it's possible there's a chemical reaction between lithium-based grease + rubber that isn't present with silicone-based. Other than that, I have no idea.
