Default price for a clutch change...

Hey-

I got a quote from Honda of $1100 to change the '00 clutch to the '02+ clutch. This seems a bit high for a clutch job (Miata was only $750). Is this reasonable?

XVIPER- I know you posted the HOW TO on the other thread. How difficult is it (I am a novice, but have a rather experienced friend with all air tools and the such)?

The transmission and engine are still under warranty until '07 or 100,000 miles. Will me changing the clutch void this warranty?

Also, if I am to replace it myself, what parts of the clutch will I need? Pressure Plate, disc, etc...

thanks

John

Doing any job by yourself, assuming you are not a licenced mechanic can be grounds for the dealer to void that part of the warranty and if you put in non-OEM parts, this will void all of any extended warranty.

Doing a clutch job is not for novices, but if you are mechanically inclined and have done other kinds of auto repair, then it's doable. It's a big job requiring lowering the engine. Don't forget to get a wheel alignment afterwards.
You should replace the throw out bearing, clutch disc, pilot bearing, resurface or replace the flywheel while you're in there and consider a new HD pressure plate. Grease all the right parts. Hardtopguy has a package deal for all of these.

NEVERMIND.......

Way too involved for me. I am still getting after Honda to see if they can get me the clutch on Good Will. Would the fact that they sold me a car that had been sitting on their lot for 5 months that has bad rear calipers help my cause? Do you know how Honda Care decides these Good Will repairs? I have heard of it being done before.

Thanks

John

I replaced my clutch about a month ago. I went the the Toda flywheel, ACT HD PP, stock friction disc, new TOB. Price was $1000 for parts and $400 for labor. I was quoted the same by Honda to do the job. If you go OEM, parts run about $350 and whatever you can get for labor.

Pulling a trans on a S2k isn't quite like a Miata or Civic. It takes a good bit more time to do. The parts also cost more than a more common car.

For example, the throwout bearing on a civic usually runs 40$ or so. On a S2k, it's $80.

I thought the book for an S2000 clutch w/flywheel is 8 hours so $400.00 would be cheap. Most shops are gonna charge at least $60/hr plus a shop materials charge so $550 - $700 is more common. Dealerships usually quote about $1000.

BTW, there is no need for an alignment after a clutch job if it is done according to the manual.

If you drop the front sub frame, like the book says, I would think you should. All of the front control arms are mounted on it. My installer did per my request, but to get a few others car aligned correctly, he has had to loosen and retighten the subframe.

Your thoughts?

It's possible that shifting the subframe side to side will cause the camber to change. There isn't much room to move it though.

You do have to dissconnect the steering shaft coupler, as long as you mark it and reinstall on the same spline the toe settings shouldn't change.

Shifting the subframe to equalize camber would be the last thing I'd do when aligning the car, it has all 3 axis of adjustment available at each wheel.

I have done it more than once and obviously thousands have been done a dealerships without problem (no TSB regarding the issue). I simply do not see there is enough play in the subframe mounting to change alignment. Maybe you have seen some other damage being addressed but I don't think there is an issue when just lowering and raising the subframe.

Parts and labor? Or just the labor? Similar to others, I paid about $400 to $450 I think for the work to swap mine out. I purchased the parts themselves aftermarket.
