Default Preventative Maintenance....

I did a search and came up empty handed, so here I go. I realize there are numerous factors that play into it, but for the sake of argument, is the 250k-300k mark the point one's engine should be rebuilt? When I get mine, the cylinder head will be rebuilt, but it got me wondering how much longer does the engine block itself has before it needs re-doing? Assuming the car is an '03 with 130k on it and one auto cross under its belt with its current owner

The obsessive compulsive side of me wants to do it, however the more practical side of me thinks to do the full rebuild at 130k could yield next to no upside, if any at all. Of course, if the oil pressure, oil consumption, and compression are all within acceptable limits (factory spec's) then I wont do the rebuild. But under the heading of "Preventative maintenance", I'd rather rebuild the motor when it would be prudent, rather than when it's too late. Any thoughts?

If I bought a car with 230k on it, I wouldn't rebuild just for the sake of rebuilding.

The life of your motor depends entirely on how it's treated, obviously. You'll need to freshen up the bottom end if you've noticed things like blow-by or metal shavings in your oil when changing it. Just do a comp/leak-down test to determine what kind of shape everything is in. With that mileage, just be diligent about your oil changes and make sure your level is where it should be.

But like dwight said, don't waste your money if it isn't necessary.

Thanks Dwight and to you as well, Jimbo. That's the same advice I've gotten from others as well. Proof that I'm over-thinking as usual. If the bottom end needs rebuilding, then so be it. No sense crossing the bridge till it's needed. Any more thoughts would be most welcome. Knowledge is power, and all that.
