The steering wheel will not lock unless you turn the key to the "off" positition and then remove the key from the ignition switch. If you turned the keyy to the "off" position, with the car in gear and the clutch out, the motor will spin until the clutch gets pressed in or taken out of gear.
The reason the start button was not needed, was because the car was going 80-85 mph "in gear", meaning the engine was spinning the whole time.

I've been in a Civic where the driver took the key out of the ignition to unlock the glove box. I guess we got lucky.

If you just stick the key in the cylinder without turning the key to the "ON" position, of course it will be locked
