Default Possible transmission issue?...

Hello,

I've been having some trouble with my car since I bought it. The problem started on third gear. Everytime I activate the clutch and put the car into third gear it almost "grinds", it makes a loud noise and it's very difficult to put in. So I went out for a test drive and went I went to put it in 3rd gear very slowly and it was almost like it didn't want to accept it, it almost pushed it back out...

So it started out with only 3rd gear, but now it's 2nd gear too. It's driving me insane and I have no idea what it is.

Can you tell us a little bit about when you last changed your MTF?

Can you tell us a little bit about when you last bled your clutch?

I bought the car with 30k miles on it and now there's almost 32k on it, and I have yet to do any of that. So i'm not sure.

Well, I think you need to do those things and then report back. Good luck!

In additon to what others have said, re-grease the shifter assembly, too. There's a good DIY guide on these forums if you search for it.

It does sound like your sychros have taken a beating, though.

I'm almost 100% positive that's what it is. How much does something like that cost to repair? ...

A LOT... try new honda mtf2 in it. i bet it will go away if not make it better... if it still there after that, then start putting those pennys away.
its over 10 hours labor and with an avrge shop labor rate of 100 your looking well over 1000 just because of labor

if thats the case you might look into a used transmission

Indymac makes a good point. Although it is likely your synchros, you can get these symptoms if there is air in the line between your clutch master and slave cylinders. If you find your clutch fluid level is low, you should replace & bleed your clutch fluid.

Second and third gear have separate synchros, so if they're both gone, (and it's not the clutch fluid), it means that someone has been forcing the shifter while grinding. Changing your tranny fluid to fresh MTF might help.

Here is a must read.

This was a great thread, however the photos of the synchros are now deleted.

I think the easy answer here is to change all the fluids in the car. That's what I would do with a 30K mile car with no maintenance history.

That's a great thread by woodwork though. I had never seen that before.
