Default popping clicking noise from car when going slow

hey guy,

My s2k has 130,000 on it now and it seems to be having a issue I can't figure out. When backing up slowly, or going forward slowly the car seems to be making a clicking/popping noise. It also is hard to downshift from second to 1st when pulling into a parking lot. the hard to go into fist issue seems to go away once I drive it a bit. Although the popping noise never goes away. It even does it sometimes in nutral just rolling. I was thinking it was the tsb about the tqing axle nuts to 220 but I went and got new axle nuts and it tqed them and it never went away. SO now i'm thinking cv joints? What do you guys think? I love my s2k but I'm getting to the point where I feel like a low mile motor, trans, and diff is what it needs.

Yeah, it could possibly be a CV joint... or a bad wheel bearing. The 2-to-1 downshift when cold, that's pretty normal. Do you try to rev-match when you do that?

yes, I do always rematch. I'll try replacing the wheel bearings and go from there. To replace the cv joints, you have to replace the whole axle right?

I highly doubt it is the cv joints. If your car went 130k before the axle nut tsb, then it could very well be wheel bearings. AND hubs.

There is hub test I think you can do....put it on stands and loosen the axle nuts. Leave the wheels on, work through the center cap hole. The press fit of the bearing races should keep the wheel bearing and wheel tight. If you can feel play in the bearing with the nut loose, the hub is worn because the race slid on the hub, meaning it has no press fit anymore.

I would do a hub and wheel bearing on any wheel that has play with the nut loose.

thanks billman. My cousin works at honda and he said it was much easier to do the "cv joints" then it was to take apart the hub and bearings. I had a local that has a set of axles off a car that only had 26k on it. I got them for $75 and we are going to try this first.

What are the part numbers on the hub and bearing? I want to look them up and see how much that is. I'll do that test tomarrow if this doesnt fix it. (which I doubt it will)

This morning when I went outside to get in the car it had a bit of resitance to backing up and kept making the popping sound. It seems though if I drive it for a while (like 50 miles) it goes away until I let it sit over night or in the parking garge at work for 8 hours. Then it comes right back.

try to tighten your lugs incase they're not 100% tight. I had a similar issue (no popping noise, just clicking though)

I always tq my lugs. We installed the "new" axles tonight. I'll report back tomarrow if it makes the noise or not.
