How do we know this guy is legit

We don't other than his claims, which should be taken with a grain of salt. I'm going to stick with castrol because that's what this car has ran. After 155,000 miles it's still running like a dream.

Do people not understand that an engine is designed to run on a specific weight oil for a reason and unless you are in climates(race, etc) that would necessitate something other than what the engineers designed it for.........oh never mind! People will not listen to logic.
As an aside.........THANK YOU for posting the rebate. I bought 2 - 5qt jugs off amazon not long ago and plan to in a few weeks order 2 MORE so I can get the most out of that rebate! I love the reviews and I can't wait to run this stuff through my engine and see what Blackstone Labs has to say about it when compared back to back to the previous stuff I was running. Only thing is that 2 more jugs will probably last me at least 3 years! Oh well. Good to have on hand I guess. It doesn't go bad sitting there sealed up.

My question with these reviews and research is what are we getting out of them? Is the top oil going to add tens of thousands of miles to the operational lifespan of our engines or are we simply adding a few hundred? Are we just hoping for longer OCIs?
How often is oil quality blamed in terms of engine failure among passenger cars? It seems like people really obsess over this stuff, but I don't know what the actual results mean.

You are pretty much correct. Oil related failure these days is almost impossible, engines will die a natural death for various reasons and oil brand won't be one of them. Oil quality these days is so good the difference that they add in longevity is going to be pretty small. Use a top brand oil of your choosing in the appropriate viscosity and worry about other factors that will lead to parts failure on the vehicle. Our engines don't have flat tappets and pushrods like ancient domestic designs, so wear is even less pronounced on a modern engine. Use a decent oil, change it at the appropriate time with a good quality filter and enjoy the ride !
