peculiar noise coming from rear of car
So last night I noticed a new noise coming from my car. It comes from either both sides of the rear or the middle of the rear of the car. At first, I thought something was on one of my tires, since the sound corresponds with the speed of the car. I can hear it VERY clearly driving through parking lots and going very slowly. However, it's also prevalent at normal freeway speeds. The sound is NOT constant, and it sounds like something is out of balance (wheels are straight and true, tires are 100% balanced). First thought was a warped rotor, but it's more of a metal on metal sound as opposed to a brake pad hitting a rotor every rotation. So Im sorta confused as to what the problem could be since the sound has the TIMING of a warped rotor, but the sound itself doesnt correlate with that. Anyone have any ideas? This is on a MY2000 w/41927 miles. Is my diff ok? LSD? Axle?
Thanks,
Matt

well depending on the type of sound it could be different things.
if it soulds like a metat scraping noise it could be the backing plate for the brakes, or you could need brakes...
if its more of a cliking it could be either a axle, or the axle nuts are loose.
if its more of a grinding/groaning sound it could be a bearing.
you description of the sound is not very descriptive. if you want anyone to even have a shot at helping you need to either find words that better illustrate what you are hearing, or post a recording of the sound

I had a noise coming from my rear end on my 01 that sounded like the metal scratcher on the brake pad rubbing on the rotor, turns out the axle nut was loose, when I went to take it of with the breaker bar I barely touched it and it came loose. check that out.

*UPDATE*
I haven't gotten the rotors turned yet, but today I thought of something else that doesnt quite make sense for it to be a brake related issue.
1) Hitting the brakes does not make the noise quit.
2) When the car turns to the right, the noise quits.
3) When it turns to the left, it gets slightly louder.

Jacked the car up, put the rear end on jackstands, tried my hardest to feel "play" in the wheel with hands at 12 and 6 and no dice. I can *hear* the scraping/metal noise coming from the wheel when I put it in gear and let the wheel free-turn, but not as loudly as I can when Im driving.
