PCV Valve diagnostic
In the Service Manuel, the diagnostic for the PCV valve is to squeeze the tube, and there should be a clicking sound.
well, i failed that test...there was no clicking sound.
then someone suggested that I take the pcv valve out and shake it and it should click around...well, i failed that test as well.
so i have a couple of questions.
1 - what causes a pcv valve to fail?
2 - does a non-functional pcv valve lead to increased oil consumption (I am losing 2 quarts of oil per 2,000 miles)
Thanks,
Jeff

a pcv valve will rattle when you shake it. pcv's usually fail as a result of oil blow by especially if that oil is old because it will gum up and cause the pcv to stick.
2 quarts / 2000 miles is kind of alot! i dont think thats the problem...

should i replace my pcv valve?
yes...i consume a lot of oil and i don't know why. i am going to get krankvents and see if that helps.
i will do a leakdown test soon too...last time i did a leakdown, i had 6% leakage across...so i don't think its damaged rings...

since i will get krank vents eventually, should i just keep my pcv and gut it?
whats the harm of driving with a pcv that doesn't work...i suppose my engine can't create good vacuums...is that the extent of it?

keep your pvc valve. just add the krankvents to it.
should i gut the pcv valve? that would mean that the pcv valve can never fail if it's gutted right?
