Default P1399 and P0302

Hey guys,

Got gas this morning, gas cap seemed to tighten faster than usual, but didn't think anything of it at the time. Drove to work and opened the trunk to smell raw gas fumes. Again, didn't think anything of it at the time. After work, drove to get something to eat and smelt the gas again when opening the trunk. Went to leave and while leaving the parking lot the CEL popped up. I drove home and ran the codes: P0302 and pending code of P1399. I smelt the gas again and decided to check the gas cap. It was loose. Now I've read that you'll get an evap code from a loose gas cap, but couldn't really find anything on misfires. Car is a 2002 with 37k miles.

Any help would be great. I made sure to tighten the hell out of the cap this time, and will be driving it again tomorrow.

Car drives great, no abnormally loud ticking. I recently installed an k&n intake and pulled the 7.5a ecu fuse for about 30 min, but that's it. I ran the compression about 1200 miles ago when I bought the car. On a semi warm motor (let idle for 5 min)- 200,205,205,205.

Assuming you have the faulty gas cap that some AP1s experienced -- it's not so much tightening the crap out of it, as it is grabbing the gas cap by the outside edge while tightening (and not the middle part) -- you can feel it grab/tighten nicely when you hold it by the edges.

I was getting the same code I believe on my 02 last year. There is a service bulletin on this - might be a thread or two here if you search. I had the repairs made to mine last summer. Assuming you have the same problem, and I bet you do, it involves replacing both the end piece of the fuel filler pipe and the cap. Fixed mine completely. I have the service bulletin in pdf if you want I can shoot it to you. It spells out the parts needed and the repair process in detail. You might be able to do it yourself. I had the dealer do it. I tried to have Honda pay for it - answer was NO - car is too far off warranty.

Here is a link to one of many threads. https://www.s2ki.com/forums/s2000-un...1456-a-387485/

Hey yeah if you could send me the PDF of the repair process I would greatly appreciate it! I've noticed the smell before when I drove top down, I got out and just tightened the gas cap. I guess this time I drove the car too long with it loose.

So just an update: I tightened the cap, cleared the codes and have been driving the car for three days and the code hasn't came back. I'm debating whether to buy a new fuel filler neck or not. If I do buy a new one, can I assume it will be the revised version from Honda? I just don't want to buy a new filler neck for it to have the same problem a year later.

I've read that a new cap is just a temporary fix, and that the filler neck and cap need to be replaced

From my research, you're correct in that it's not the cap, it's a defect in the fuel filler neck -- here's the TSB (page 3+ for the S2000):
http://www.crvownersclub.com/TSBs/2004/04-002.pdf

Per my post, figure out how to properly tighten the gas cap, and you don't have to deal with the actual fix (and won't get a gas smell or CEL).

I've been living with the special tightening technique for 5+ years now -- takes all but 2 extra seconds at the gas station. To me, it's not worth the $90 for P/N 17660-S2A-A31 and the hour or so it'll take me to wiggle out the fuel filler. Rather spend that on beer.

Haha yeah that's my dilemma, spend the 120$ for the filler neck and cap and never worry about it again or just remember to put in on the right way once a week

Haha. I actually got the CEL my first week of ownership -- it scared the crap out of me so much so that I've never forgotten the tightening trick
