Default Overoiling an Air Filter?!?

Hi,

at the moment i use a Comptech CAI with Foam Air Filter.
Is it possible to put too much oil on the air filter (overoiling it)?

If so, what would happen?

By the way, is it possible to use another filter, i. e. K&N with the Comptech Cold Air Intake?

Greetings from Germany

I can't say for sure about a foam filter but I have possibly over-oiled my JR filter (like a K&N). I noticed some oil dripping off it but it didn't seem to have any bad effects on the car. I think any excess oil just gets sucked into the engine as vapour and gets burned up harmlessly. In short time, the amount of oil in the filter will equalize to where it needs to be. A foam filter might be more sensitive to being over oiled. Lay it on newspaper to draw some of the excess out if you're worried about it.

Over oiling any filter will inhibit airflow and affect performance. Put just enough on there to completely moisten the surface, but do not soak the material.

I just removed the foam filter and noticed, that way too much oil is on it.
Even the bottom of the box, which holds the filter is full of oil

I cleaned the box and the filter.

Hope this was the cause of the powerloss.

By the way, can i use the K&N filter cleaner also for foam filters?

I used to have racing motorcycle and as i did the maintenance myself i used to completely soak the filter in the oil and wring it out and never had problem.
BTW how do you like your comptech CAI. ?? I want to buy one next summer but i hesitate between this one and the k&n one.
Thanks.

To those wondering this about gauze filters like the K&N, you are looking to coat the filter but not paint it. Try for a nice even spray but not a dripping soak.

I asked this question when I was talking to a technician at Comptech last week. They said it would be OK to use the K&N cleaner and oil on their foam filter elements. I was happy to hear that since I have some left over from a previously owned car.
