bad rad cap would make lots of coolant leak = obvious its bad.
leak is less of a problem as fluid boil if the cap can't hold pressure(think: pressurized seal system)

i seriously doubt it can't be catch if anyone can pay a little attention to the gauge.

as to replacing the engine: WHY? there's tons to stuff to check first, HG, head before shelling out for a new engine.

if you can't or don't know where to look then bring to a shop, don't blow money at a problem you don't know.

it's like asking for kidney transplant because you feel funny in the tummy, you don't know what's wrong and what went bad.

you prob just need a headgasket, and maybe mill the head, I did the same thing i spent way less then 2500 to fix it. so i would say start there, not a whole new motor unless you have that kinda money to blow.

Temperatures in the combustion chamber of the engine can reach 4,500 F (2,500 C), so cooling the area around the cylinders is critical. Areas around the exhaust valves are especially crucial, and almost all of the space inside the cylinder head around the valves that is not needed for structure is filled with coolant. If the engine goes without cooling for very long, it can seize. When this happens, the metal has actually gotten hot enough for the piston to weld itself to the cylinder. This usually means the complete destruction of the engine.
