Default Over-revving: Tell tale signs of damage caused?

I am an idiot and downshifted into 2nd gear while doing about 68 mph (I downshifted before realizing my speed). The car over-revved for a few seconds before it was back below 9K. The car drives completely fine but being an anal bastard, I am a bit worried about any potential damage. Are there any tell tale signs would occur if the engine had been damaged? The car runs perfectly fine at this point so I am trying to decide if I should put this to rest in my mind.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Chances are your clutch slipped and your motor is not damaged. If it runs fine and sounds normal, I think you're fine. If you over-reved your car, most likely it would not run correctly or at all. If the car feels the same then I wouldn't worry about it, just pay extra attention next time because you might not be so lucky. If you're losing sleep over this, check your compression. HTH.

Top speed for 2nd is aorund 62mph, so going 68mph isn't that bad. I believe the F20C can take a little more then 9000 rpms and still be alright.

But the first signs of damage should be rough idle, knocking, and a check engine light.

rought idle will be the noticable problem, the valves will be out of spec most of the time. hesitation and stumbling are also signs to look out for.

@68 MPH on 2nd gear, the engine should be around 9000RPM. That should be fine. Remember, the Redline on the tach is 8800 or 8900. I forget. Do a search for "modifry". He should have more information on the engine redline.

Fuel cutoff is around 9200rpm when accelerating toward the limiter. Not sure if it's different for different gears.

That shouldn't be too far off from your 68mph, so you should be fine. If you don't have any rough idle or other problems, you probably got off lucky.

Besides, if you saw 68mph, your actual speed was probably under 65 due to built-in speedo error.

Be careful next time!

Thanks for all the replies. This really helps.

To answer some of the questions, I spiritedly downshifted into second. As I did this, I saw the red portion of the tachometer flashing for what seemed a few seconds. The clutch did seem to engage properly without slipping. I could be wrong however.

I am also not sure if I was going 68 when I downshifted or if it was more like 70.

I drove the car yesterday without any issues. The idle seemed fine.
