Over revved engine
Hey every one,
I went out for a nice a cruise the other day and went from redline 3rd gear to 2nd instead of 4th by accident.
Luckily, I think I reacted fast enough and it only stayed in 2nd for less than a second. The car also started going sideways till I clutched in.
I don't hear any funny sounds and car seems to drive normally.
My question: what are the chances that I damaged something and is there anything I can look at?

Removing the valve cover and inspect the keepers and retainers. Look for a sunk valve stem as the keepers and retainers can crack, this will be the net effect if severe. ap2 are beefier though yes.

If you don't mind me asking, how were you holding the shift knob when you did this?

That's how I shift and I have not missed a gear since.

Inspect retainers, remember to replace valve cover seal, and spark plug tube seals as well. Also, it could take days before you notice symptoms of a bent valve

It shouldn't be. There's nothing labor-intensive about inspecting the retainers - you literally take the valve cover off and visually check them for shifting upwards on the valve stem, but I wouldn't trust anyone but a competent mechanic very familiar with the S2000 and the cracking retainers problem. Some members don't feel a visual inspection of the retainers while they're in the car is enough to assess cracked valve retainers, removing them wouldn't be a super-complicated procedure for a mechanic familiar with the S2000. A very reputable, local shop quoted me ~$300 for replacing my valve retainers with the AP2 version.
Also, I believe Billman250 has said that in an AP2 (with the F22) you would have to miss 2 gears before incurring damage. The F20c, on the other hand, runs to the ragged edge of the AP1 retainers' threshold. ANY amount of over-rev (OVER 9000!!!!!) can crack retainers.
In any case, I would have it checked out, though.

Dry shifting is going to kill those poor syncros.
