i did it twice at least. From 3rd to 2nd in Vtec.

I plan to get my valve adjustment done for my car (it's getting to 60K miles). Is it a good time to get the retainers checked out?

Well, unless you told them you over-revved and asked them to check the retainers, I wouldn't expect much from them. Don't pin your hopes on the dealer.

Exact same thing happened to me 4 years ago but the RPMs shot way past 9,000 mark and the tires chirping and smoking, this was at 500 miles on the odometer. 25,000 miles later the car was still driving fine.

Thats what I did. I had one valve that had come out of adjustment somehow. They checked the retainers and gave it a valve adjusment and a clean bill of health. Thanks again to Garret at Carter Honda. He is the best.

would the ap2 retainers allow the f20 to rev to 9k safely? i remember reading on here about switching ap1 for ap2 retainers but the author was not sure how the ap2's will handle at 9k. has anyone found answers to that yet?
I doubt it, the extra grand of revs is quite menacing from a mechanical engineering standpoint. A heavier retainer isn't a good thing at nine grand.

I would think the springs and valve weight and strength would matter more than retainer being slighty beefier.
