exactly, the motor does have a rev limiter, but if you force it to spin too fast (by making the wheels spin the motor by misshift) no force on earth will stop any damage.
The motor will not rev past 9K on its own, though. You have to actually force it by having the wheels power the motor instead of vice versa.
As far as I know, OEM retainers are best for a street car. The AP2 ones are the way to go.
