It was mainly in the tray and all over the bettery. I took the tray out and washed it out completely with ether.

Ether is not a good a idea. It does not neutralize the acid.

A garden hose is the BEST thing available to wash off battery acid.

A can of coca cola will also neutralize the battery acid.

Baking soda for a couple of minutes then wash off with a garden hose.
