Opening Diff for inspection, is it possible?
Im about to install a replacement rear diff, and was wanting to inspect it before installation. I know I can get a peek through the drain hole, but I was wanting to be more thorough if possible. Is there any trick, or way to crack it open, even just partially, to get a good look inside without have to take off the front flange, and reset the preload, or do any other type of rebuilding, or dialing-in type activites? I've read the service manual on the diff dissasembly, and searched but was unable to find an answer to this. Thanks in advance!

You can open the diff case and inspect it. You only need to remove the rear cover to do it right. For that you need to remove the 1/2 shafts. They pop out with some force (Brass driff and hammer). They are held in place with C clips inside the LSD. Next remove the bolts holding the rear cover. make note as they are several differant lengths. one they have been removed, there are two ears in the case to be used to pry it open. Once you have cracked the seal, it will open easily.
You only take the flange off to swap gears. No need to just inspect it.
