The best mod I made for helping with notchiness was a heavier shift knob. I installed a Abrams and it helped quite a bit. Just food for thought. My '01 has 114k on the clock and still shifts butter smooth even in the cold. I don't know why though.
I'm afraid to stray from the Honda MTF2 because my transmission shifts flawlessly with 60k miles on it.

It was a bit notchy in 2nd gear when I first got the car. After doing the shifter lube (per TSB), and adjusting the clutch engagement point, and swapping fresh MTF2 fluid it has been perfectly smooth at any temperature. I did a clutch fluid change as well but the first items made the biggest difference. I just bought a heavier shift knob (skunk2) and it does change the feel of the shifter quite a bit for some reason.

Thanks for the continued information on this, it makes sense that the tranny would stiffen up in cold temp use with the engine oil. Let us know how the Amsoil MTF goes for you.

While on the subject of tranny fluid, what do you make of the reports of MTF3 available in Europe these days Indy ?, do you think it is just like our MTF2 that is labelled differently across the pond ?.
So far, the AMSOIL MTF works fine. Like most other MTF's though, you have to wait for the tranny to warm up for 2nd gear shifts to be less than frightful. Getting the RPMs up some before shifting to 2nd is the only technique that works. Unfortunately, that's an awkward driving style for getting out of my neighborhood in the morning with a 20 MPH speed limit and lots of stop signs.

I'm really not familiar with the newest MTF III. Other than the picture of it, I have no clue what it is.

i have used factory lube in my trans for 52,000 miles and 7 years, changed once at 30k...the pop out of gear i have experienced is on very cold days i can not put it into 1st 100% complete and it pops upon start...then i put it into 1st properly and it is good to go...that has happened maybe 4 times till i learned when cold the trans needs some extra attention putting it into 1st at start for about 4 min...no 2nd gear issues ever adn it is a great gearbox. sure the 2nd gear has more of a crunch feel than any other gear, but it is not a grind, just a characteristic of the gear box when shifting slowly.
