thanks everyone - I just wanted to understand what the issue was with the engine - I understand now and appreciate the explanation.

I was never going to move to lower octane without finding this out - despite a guy in our office saying it was ok but he did not know the compression ratio 11:1...

he puts lower octane in his mercedes which calls for premium...

He needs to stop listening to the internet. There was an article a couple weeks back saying premium was not needed. I've heard it ever since. I can't believe people buy into everything they read.

If you are referring to me, the starter here - I did not read anything on the internet about this, I was just asking a logicial question having to do with these times - You would be better and have more friends if you did not presume everyone you don't know is an idiot.

If you are referring to the guy in my office - he has always not put premium in this car long before the article you might be referring to.

The ecu will relearn itself if it senses a lower octane from what I've read before, so you just lack performance. Im not postive but Im almost sure I've read that on this site before.

Look man. All i can say is RTFM. Mother dosen't recommend it, it says that it requires 93 octane. Why would we go against the manual that Honda wrote about a car they manufactured? That is of course unless you built your S2000.

yes, use 87 octane just to save like $2 per fillup. i bet you have other vices (starbucks, cable tv, buying name brand food/clothing vs generic) that you could also live without. at least making changes in that area would lead to a substantial amount of money.

have fun with your crappier S2000.

lets calculate:
lets assume we are located here in california where the price of gas is royally a bitch and is super expensive...
if the price of premium fuel (91) is at 4.69 a gallon for premium
the price of mid-grade (89) fuel is at 4.49
and the price of regular grade (87) is 4.39

the difference between 91 and 87 is 30 cents.
the difference between 91 and 89 is 20 cents.

30 cents more than $4.39 is a difference of 6.83%
20 cents more than $4.39 is a difference of 4.26%

that being said, i want to say that in conclusion, its not worth it to get 87 octane gas for your 91 grade ONLY S2000 because the difference in price between 91 and 87 or 89 is now SO insignificant due to the VERY high gas prices.

just a thought
^^ Definetly right. Our tank holds 10.3 gallons I believe, and at $4.69 (premium) is $48.30, $4.49 (Unleaded) is $46.28, $4.39 (regular) is $45.22. Now you save almost 2$ if you get the unleaded and almost 3$ if you get the regular....how fast can you make $2-$3? (about in an half an hour from a minimum wage job). Now as everyone else stated, it will ruin your mechanical-ware......"Buy cheap, buy twice"
