So....what's the final analysis? Was it due to a fan? Was it due to adding oil in a sloppy manner? I don't mean to be a jerk, I'd just like to know.

Just for the record, your spray was in my opinion caused when the engine was started with the oil cap off it is the only way it could have created a spray to reach the heat shield! also check the liner on the hood, my guess would be that it contains some traces of oil - at the very least the shop should clean your engine bay because of a stupid mistake! If you doubt me start your engine and rev it with the cap off!

It is possible that the hood was up and no oil hit it but, the reason I feel confident is that I did this to my car and the mess you had looks exactly like mine!
Either way they should clean your engine!

So they looked at it and after you said they did it, they're making you clean it up? Incredible.

Rworne, some garages have a hose that is mounted on the ceiling that dispenses the engine oil. The hose is on a spring loaded reel that will reel it back up and out of the way when the tech is finished. I would imagine that this is what they were using and the tech let it go and it reeled itself up, throwing oil everywhere.

I would hope that this was an accident, but I also would think that the garage would have cleaned it up before they gave it back to you.
