Default Oil Temperature

Hey Guys,

I have a greddy turboed s2k. I recently hooked up an oil temperature gauge ( auto meter ) into the relocation kit where the filter is and the temperature reading goes above 300F after 5 minutes. I know oil is suppossed to take a long time to heat up but it gets to 300F in 5 minutes. The stock heat exchanger is still there hooked up with the coolant and i recently added a 30 row oil cooler right behind the intercooler. It takes about 10 minutes to get to 300F but it still gets to 300.

My car has been boosted for over 5 months now and i recently just got the temperature installed. While i am using a gauge a size or two smaller than recommended, could my oil temps really be hitting 300? Ive sat through 100F traffic and went on speed runs a few times now.

If so is there any sign that my engine could/may be damaged?

I have a hard time believing the temp is reaching 300, ever. I suspect a faulty gauge or sensor.

My s/c car never sees 200F unless I'm driving hard for a good while. Certainly never in traffic or idling.

Hmm i have replaced the sensor with a new autometer one as well but it still climbs there.

In fact i have actually put 2 30 row oil coolers in front of the radiator and it still hits 300 on the gauge. would the gauge difference be an issue? ive had faulty aem gauges in the past i wonder if autometer would send another

It's up to the gauge to decode the voltage/resistance reading from the sensor into the value it shows on the display, so yes the gauge can be at fault. Just explain it reads 300 within 5 minutes of a cold start, they'll know that's not right

I agree. Your sensor and/or wiring is bad. 300ºF would = boil-over of the coolant.

Oil temperatures can hit 280-290 after a few hot laps and no oil cooler, that an idling motor hits 300f with an oil cooler doesn't make sense unless you have serious engine problems. Most likely a bad gauge, or badly installed.

Check your ground to the sensor.
