Oil pressure super low when vtec?
Before or after piggyback tune same deal.
Car is always warmed up (15 minute drive) before excessive amounts of redline/vtec driving
Apparently this has been happening for many oil changes/years but the car drives completely fine and vtec always engages sharp at 6k.
OIL PSI = APPROXIMATELY 15 when WOT @ VTEC
Oil i've used
Motul 5w-40 - second most often
Redline 10w-30 - most often
Mobil 5w-30 - third
Baldwin b202 oil filter (two times the size of OEM s2000 filter) I've been using this as inspired by a thread by rrounds.
Maybe my gauge is faulty? Either way, I've been driving it hard for the past 50k miles now at 181k and car still seems to be amazingly fine? Only changed the original coil packs at ~170k /shrug
2004 ap2
Any insight?
- Faulty gauge?
- Vtec always kicks in properly
- Oil pump? No way the car has been driven hard for past 50k miles if this is bad right?
thanks

This engine won't survive 6000+ rpm's with only 15 psi oil pressure, period. Actually I don't know of any engine that would survive with that low of oil pressure turning those rpm's with our power numbers.

Like others have said tell us more about the gauge. How it’s plumbed etc etc.
I suspect gauge because catastrophic damage would occur. And stock ecu without piggyback at 15psi it’s not possible for vtec to trigger.

that sounds ridiculously low, not even within the realm of reasonable. I suspect a bad gauge , assuming proper installation If it is 15 psi at vtec then it must be dead 0 at idle Throttle position doesn't mean much it is the rpms that you go by. I think the engine would have expired by now if the gauge was accurate.

Agreed. There are many conditions in which VTEC activation can occur. Engine temp, TPS %, oil pressure, and others that I don't recall now, but 15PSI is not enough oil pressure for VTEC activation if you're using the stock ECU. Typically 15PSI is the oil pressure most get when idling at operating temps.

Didn't get a chance to drive for a bit.
Updating.
Gauge has been on for over 5 years going off sandwich plate wire in.
car fully warmed
idles:15
driving normal no WOT: from 15 at idle all the way past 90
vtec psi: around 15-55 all over the place.
I may remove entire unit or replace the sensor/wire as suggested lol
Car drives perfectly fine, ecu all good. power all around and vtec still extremely noticeable at 6k as usual
