Good luck,

Frankly I don't trust my untrained ears enough to know what knocking sounds like. What types of sounds should I be listening for? All I know for now is that the engine sounds the same as it did before all this.
Also, what types of symptoms of impending doom should I be watching for? Is it just knocking or are there other things I should keep an eye on?
Finally, is it possible for problems to manifest thousands of miles down the line as a result? Just trying to get a sense of the maximum time horizon. If something's going to fail, I'd rather it fail now rather than when I'm in the middle of a road trip somewhere.
Thanks for all the help, guys.

If I were you, I'd change the oil and send a sample of the used oil in for analysis. I've been using Blackstone Laboratories, but there are other good ones. Contact one of them, get a sample container (free) and pay the $20 or so for an analysis. If there is an excess of metal particles in the oil, the analysis will reveal them and you can make decisions from there.

After the service advisor called back to tell me that he had topped off my oil, I started wondering how they knew whether I had synthetic or conventional oil in there. I asked, and the service advisor immediately said that they had topped off with synthetic.
I didn't really trust them so I took the car and changed its engine oil right away. So right now it has fresh oil in there. I may wait a bit and then take a sample anyway, though.
Thanks for the tip.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the help. You guys have been awesome. I think what I'll do for now is (A) listen/watch the engine closely for any unusual sounds, (B) solicit a more informed opinion when possible, and

I know this is bringing up an old thread... but i have started to get this as well... it seems though that when i slow down to a stop the revs slightly drop off to maybe 600rpm then rise again to 800ish then oil light comes on for like a second then turns off...
Would this be MAP sensor related and not keeping the engine at proper RPM to keep the pump working??
